Somehow, although I’ve seen Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds several times, I didn’t know (or had forgotten) that it was based on a short story By Daphne Du Maurier and originally set in Cornwall. (I’m watching the wonderful Doc Martin on Netflix and there’s an episode where everyone keeps quoting Du Maurier on the quality of Cornwall’s water.) You can find the story in The Birds and Other Stories. The story is a beautiful example of building dread through atmosphere.
