Story 359e/366

I did not know Smeds’ work before I read this story in Sirens and Other Demon Lovers (edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling). It is a tale of longing, of a bereaved man who seeks solace in a substitute and discovers it’s not enough.

Story 359b/366

Baker is a graduate of the Clarion Workshop and her time there was obviously well spent. “Throwing Stones” is a tale of gender and goblins and she sucks the reader into her world without seeming to try. She is at work on a novel set in this world. It’ll definitely be worth reading. This story appears on the Beneath Ceaseless Skies site.

Story 309/366

This is a fabulous story in the old sense of the word “fabulous.” It is full of lush wordplay that reminds me a lot of Tanith Lee. This story appears on the Lightspeed site. Read more about Megan on her blog, Bitter Irony.

“Big Me” by Dan Chaon

Story 301/366

This story was a delightful surprise. I tend to associate journals like Gettysburg Review with a particular kind of lit fic and this is an urban fantasy who writes diary entries aimed at his future self–Big Me. This story appears on the Gettysburg Review site.
