I did not know Smeds’ work before I read this story in Sirens and Other Demon Lovers (edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling). It is a tale of longing, of a bereaved man who seeks solace in a substitute and discovers it’s not enough.

Baker is a graduate of the Clarion Workshop and her time there was obviously well spent. “Throwing Stones” is a tale of gender and goblins and she sucks the reader into her world without seeming to try. She is at work on a novel set in this world. It’ll definitely be worth reading. This story appears on the Beneath Ceaseless Skies site.
