“Hope Chest” by Garth Nix

Story 153/366

I’m a fan of Garth Nix’ Abhorsen Trilogy, aka The Old Kingdom series because there are now four books in it. You might call “Hope Chest” a “weird western,” or you might just say it defies genre. It’s set in an alternate US past of 1922 and the “hope chest” of the title belongs to an orphaned girl. This story originally appeared in the Firebirds Anthology in 2003. You can listen to the story here, read by Mur Lafferty. You can learn more about his books here.

See you tomorrow!
