Young Goodman Brown, Nathaniel Hawthorne
by Patti Abbott
Newly married Goodman Brown leave his wife alone, despite her pleas, to go a mission. In the forest, he finds the townspeople attending a Witches’ Sabbath and believes them now to be full of hypocrisy. These are the same people he sees at church and hears praying at their windows. He also believes his wife is at the Sabbath and a part of it. He is not sure if this was a dream or an actual event, but goes with the latter. So his marriage is also soured. Hypocrisy of the birth of evil, I’m not sure of the main theme here.
