Greatness Strikes Where It Pleases, Lars Gustaffson

by Patti Abbott

This is the story of a mentally handicapped male from early childhood through adulthood. Most of his life takes place in a asylum. Although he is severely limited in his abilities, the language of the story defies this by being elegant and precise. The boy may not be able to do much more than look at mushrooms and the fly on the wall but by expressing it so eloquently, the author gives him a dignity and grace that ennobles him.
