“Foes” by Lorrie Moore

Story 109/366

Moore is a contemporary writer/academic whose stories often combine (as Wikipedia says) the humorous and the poignant. A number of her stories have been published in the New Yorker but they’re behind a pay wall and all you can get is an abstract. This story, “Foes” was printed in the Guardian in 2008. It is a dialogue-heavy story about a married couple from Michigan attending a literary fund raiser in DC. The ending has a sting in its tail you will not expect, especially not after the lightly snarky dialogue (which is terrific). You can read it here.

See you tomorrow!
