Out of Luck by Cathi Stoler

In the end, it’s desperation that screws you every time. This is what Johnny’s thinking as this story begins, looking at some desperate slob in Times Square about to be picked up by the cops. Johnny knows about desperation. He owes $2K to his bookie today, and doesn’t even have half. But then lady luck appears. Or does it?

This was a nice story. Good symmetry between the beginning and end.
