“Silver Water” by Amy Bloom

Story 103/366

Bloom has written one novel but she is mostly known for her beautifully crafted short stories. This one made One Story’s list of the top ten short stories of all time (right below J.D. Salinger’s “For Esme with Love and Squalor.” Her story “Love is Not a Pie,” which pretty much provides an example of “It’s complicated” made their “long list.” The story is told by Violet, younger sister to Rose, whose mental illness becomes the focus of her entire family. “Silver Water” is part of Bloom’s collection Come to Me. You can watch/listen to an oral interpretation of the story here.
