In Brightest Day by Toni L.P. Kelner

by Barb Goffman

From the anthology Home Improvement: Undead Edition (Ace 2011)

In this world, licensed houngans can bring back the dead, but only so the deceased can finish a particular, important task. Then he/she goes back in the ground. The houngan who’s the star of this tale, Dodie Kilburn, is hired to bring an architect back to finish a house that’s being donated to charity. As the story progresses, the resurrected architect “dies” again. Twice. Dodie keeps bringing him back. Now her license is in jeopardy, and Dodie’s thinking something fishy is going on.

This story is a finalist for this year’s Derringer Award in the Novelette category.
