Ice, Lily Tuck, O’Henry collection for 2011

by Patti Abbott

This attracted me because Lily Tuck won the National Book Award for her stories a few years back. And also because I had just read a novel about a life boat.
In this story, the threat is on the boat itself as a couple visit Antarctica. Unfortunately for me, the wildlife they spot is more interesting than the very familiar story of a marriage coming apart. The writing is very good but boy, have I read this story many times. I know the people who choose the stories for this would never look more widely for good stories, but they should. Only the setting made it different from a thousand others.
