Your Fate Hurtles Down At You, Jim Shepard

by Patti Abbott

This was another story from the 2011 O’Henry collection and I loved Shepard’s notes on writing this story. How he looks for unusual or exotic information before writing a story. In this one, which takes place in Bern in 1939, four men are trying to understand avalanches–perhaps for the first time. Our protagonist has been in one–one where is brother dies–and one he may have precipitated. A terrific story. I am a big fan of Shepard’s stories. Patti Abbott
