“The Rocking-Horse Winner” by D.H. Lawrence

Story 73/366

On the face of it, this tragic story is very different from the work Lawrence is best known for, the novels Women in Love and Lady Chatterly’s Lover.  Underneath, though, this tale of a woman who has champagne dreams on a beer budget and whose son pays the price for her pretensions is about class and station and a desperate need for love. The story ripped my heart out the first time I read it as part of a seminar on Lawrence; rereading it now as an adult, I find it even more powerful with its refrain of “there must be more money.”  You can read the story here.
