“The Nice People” by Henry Cuyler Bunner

Story 71/366

Bunner was a 19th century writer whose work provides a window into another time, complete with meticulous descriptions of current fashion. This story, about a couple encountered at a summer boarding house in New York, is considered “comic” but outside of some interesting social commentary about gossips and small talk, it doesn’t translate well for readers in the 21st century. (The reason for the couple’s dissembling doesn’t make any sense at all, for example.0 In his time, though, Bunner was a “card” and under his direction, the weekly comic magazine Puck became a must-read.  You can read “The Nice People” here.
