This is a science fiction story in the real sense–the way I’ve always thought of them at least. Six astronauts have been sent to a distant star to gather information. Three are dead when the story opens. A fourth is outside the spaceship and does not want to come back in. Birds have attracted his interest and he is mesmerized by them. They even seen to be inside of him and turn into jewels as they get closer. The other two haul him in, but he brings what turns out to be these real birds in with him. What are these birds? At times they seem to represent hope. But they also interfere with the mission and perhaps a budding romance. Odd, but I enjoyed it. Maybe I will read more over the year.
