Pack of Cards, Penelope Lively

by Patti Abbott

#70 Patti

This is from one of those Penguin mini collections of the 1990s,. Two stories in this collection basically serve as critiques of the British Upper Class. In this one, an intellectual, visiting the country home of his girlfriend’s grandmother is struck by how her noted collection of books is unread. It is all a house of cards in the American parlance.
