Often considered the “father of the modern short story,” Guy De Maupassant was a master of short, smart stories, often with twist endings or sharply observed moral lessons. He wrote more than 300 of these stories, six novels, three travel books and a book of poetry. Of those 300 short stories, so many are great that it’s hard to pick just one. (According to Wikipedia, “Ball of Fat,” which I’d never read before, is considered his masterpiece, so I chose that one for today rather than one of the ones I know really well.) Like many of his stories, it is set in the time of the Franco-Prussian War. It is not a subtle story at all and truth to tell, I like many other of his stories better. His command of language is amazing.
