Story 218/366
Wister, well-known for his western novel The Virginian, was born into an affluent family in Philadelphia and educated (among other places) at Harvard, where he was a classmate of Theodore Roosevelt. His maternal grandmother was the noted British actress Fanny Kemble and he was related to a number of other socially prominent people. He loved the West, having spent a number of summers out there, and was friends with artist Frederick Remington. This story concerns a nervous wife, a story-telling husband and some shaky business dealings and is decidedly dude-ish. It was first published in 1901 anonymously, then edited for publication in 1907. You can read it here.
