From the spring/summer issue of the e-zine Mysterical-E.
This is the latest story in John Floyd’s The Law And Daughter series, starring small-town sheriff Lucy Valentine and her meddling mother, Fran, who is adept at spotting and solving crime, much to her daughter’s chagrin. In this story, Fran is certain that embezzlement is going on with the city council. Here’s Lucy’s reaction, which showcases the beauty of Floyd’s writing:
“Lucy lowered her head and massaged her temples with her fingertips. Why me? she thought. And why today? This kind of thing made her wish for a good old-fashioned murder investigation, or maybe street riots.”
A good read.
