A short story a day review

Day of Rest, Matthew Funk, SHOTGUN HONEY

by Patti Abbott

I couldn’t make a diet of stories this violent but Funk is an expert at making it almost worth it. Great writing. He really understands flash fiction. His villains deserve what they get. I just wish it wasn’t quite so explicit.

A police officer’s wife is found dead in her garaged car with a suicide note. Is the death what it seems?

This was a clever story.

A low-level guy in an organized crime racket thinks he’s hit pay dirt because he’s so much smarter than everyone else. Uh huh.

#50: Twenty Ways the Desert Could Kill You, by Sarah Pinsker

Synopsis: A short snippet of meta-scifi and the deserts of New Mexico.

We left Baltimore five weeks ago. Mom came home early from her job at the space telescope. She said, “Pack your summer clothes and your five favorite things, Allie. We’re leaving on an adventure.” If I had known her idea of an adventure I might have packed better. I would have said goodbye to my friends.

“Twenty Ways the Desert Could Kill You” is free via Daily Science Fiction. Easily one of my top three for the year.

“The Man With the Cough” by Mrs. Molesworth

Story 200/366

Mrs. Molesworth (Mary Louisa Molesworth) was a Victorian children’s story writer who also wrote a lot of what would be called YA fiction today. This story is neither and told from the point of view of a German man with English sensibilities. The story blends a bit of crime with a bit of what the writer called “the uncanny.” You can read the story in a number of places on the web, including here.

See you tomorrow!
