Shelly Li has had more than 30 short science fiction stories published and her first novel, Royal Hunter: Throne Under Siege, is due out in summer of 2013 from Penguin. Shelly Li is 19 years old and a freshman at Duke. When I was 19 years old and at Duke, the only fiction I’d published was a short story in my high school literary magazine and some awesomely awful poetry in elementary school. Eleven of her stories are currently on line (here’s the link to all of them). “Jade Dragon” appeared in Daily SF in January 2011 and the link to it is here. Here’s a link to an interview with Shelly. Jade Dragon is a brief story, and it feels like it’s part of a larger work we don’t get. We do sense that the heroine will never be the same after the incident that sends her in search of the object of the title.
