Story 162/366
I was looking for Marta Randall’s story “A Scarab in the City of Time” because I think it’s a gorgeous title and instead I stumbled across “Lapidary Nights.” The link to the story is here, which eventually leads back to Randall’s own website. She was the first female president of the Science Fiction Writers of America and has taught at the prestigious Clarion Workshop, among other places. She hasn’t published a novel since 1984, but she has published short stories more recently. “Lapidary Nights” was originally published in 1987. This is a story that will catch you up from the moment you understand the title (which is explained in the opening paragraphs of the story) and Randall’s jewel-like prose will keep you entranced.
See you tomorrow!
