A short story a day review

Stars of Motown Shining Bright, Julie Orringer, HOW TO BREATHE UNDER WATER

by Patti Abbott

This is a story about friendship between teenage girls. How difficult it is amid the the stresses of family, of finding a boy, of getting it right. I chose it because it took place near by but it was universal in every way.

I love a good “pact with the devil” story and what better way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo than reading  this one byArreola, considered one of Mexico’s finest short story writers? It has a modern setting and a neat little twist. You can read it online at Ciudad Seva, where a number of his stories are archived. The story is in Spanish, but Google translate will give you the gist.
