Story 55/366
When he began his career as a professional writer, Doyle was best known for his short fiction, with one publisher praising him as the best short story writer since Edgar Allan Poe. After he created the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes, he found himself somewhat trapped by his creation; with fans clamoring for more and more stories about Holmes and Watson. He never limited his output to crime fiction though, and wrote science fiction, fantasy, historical stories, plays, romances, humor and horror. One of his horror tales, “Lot No. 249” was filmed as a chapter in a movie called Tales From the Darkside, starring Christian Slater and Steve Buscemi. This story is from The Best Horror Stories of Arthur Conan Doyle and is the shortest story in the collection. In it, a pair of indiscreet lovers test a husband’s patience and his capacity for betrayal. The twist ending isn’t subtle but it deserves to be called horror.
