“Night Wire” by H. F. Arnold

Story 37/366

Arnold (Henry Ferris Arnold) was a journalist as well as a fiction writer and you just know this story was inspired by a real stint “working the night wire” for a newspaper.  Most of the time, says the narrator, a night wire man just takes down the news, almost in his sleep but sometimes…sometimes queer things happen.  “Night Wire” first appeared in the September 1926 edition of Weird Tales. The story is now in the public domain and can be read online here. After reading the story, I couldn’t help but wonder if it inspired Stephen King to write “The Mist.”
