Story 34/366

Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett was an Irish writer who was also the 18th Baron of Dunsany and published his work under his title “Lord Dunsany,’ perhaps feeling that the name “Drax Plunkett” was a little too penny-dreadful for the demographic he wanted to cultivate. (Which is really too bad. You can’t make up a name like “Drax.”) Most of his stories were in the fantasy/dark fantasy/horror tradition and this ghost story is a classic “Lord Dunsany” story. It’s a tale told on a wild wintry night (it’s Christmas) by the ex-master of foxhounds at a Gentleman’s club, a story about a very special dinner party he attended as an uninvited guest. You can read it online here.
